The American Landships

Charles' American landships are the most surreal of the Ouragistan land ironclads, reflecting his whimsical sense of life and his love of all things naval.
Photos below by Charles. Image enhancement by David.

USLD Miskatonic
is a dreadnaught sized turreted landship. She has a marine prow because she was designed with propellors as an amphibious vessel for river service also.

Though she was never an outstanding performer on the water, she proved her worth on land at the battle of Al Bunrab, where she withstood the HMLS Sinuous' attacks by ramming, spar torpedo and bicycle torpedo, ultimately capturing the British landship by boarding.

Below, 1. the Miskatonic with her crew's fighting complement - a helmeted naval landing party, as in "The Sand Pebbles," 2. a closeup of the bridge, and 3. Miskatonic on maneuvers with USLS Inquisitrix, a casemate-type land ironclad.

A period photo shows Inquisitrix passing through the ruined outskirts of Sidi Gingriji.
Inquisitrix was named in honor of Janin, David's journalist girlfriend.

USLS Lexington
was the USA's second land ironclad design, a heavy landship with high treads and gun sponsons.

The period photo shows a rear view. Similar in design to HMLS Behemoth and sharing some of her operational problems, plus a high center of gravity which limited her ability to traverse very uneven ground, Lexington's survival, essentially intact, of the SMGS Wilhelmina von Holstein's ram and spar torpedo attack so impressed observers, that she became the progenitor for the largest class of vessels in the US Landfleet.

Construction
Charles' landships are built from card, pinned and glued to foamcore. The towers and stacks are cardboard black-powder cartridge-wraps from Charles' historical re-enactment days. The large bitt in Miskatonic's bow is a pushpin. The brass '2' on Lexington's side is a building address number.
